A kind of popular fiction that represents the narrative of Pakistani nationalism which tells us this country was made at the cost of the sacrifice of Muslims murdered by Sikhs and Hindus. It's not just a historical fiction but there are also snippets of information about the factors that were involved in the inception of Pakistan which are nothing other than distorted history under the influence of nationalism.

It would have been a good book if Nasim Hijazi had told only story, no matter that story was close to reality or not. But when you also try to give some context to your story and that context is just a parochial view, you also ruin the beauty of that story.

The copy I had, was really rusty, old, and almost tattered; combined with the story and odor, it highly reflected the bloody episodes happened during the course of partition in It describes the sacrifices and hardships a family from East Punjab had to face in the aftermath of partition and how even very close Sikh friends and neighbors betrayed their Muslim compatriots.

Though fictional, Naseem Hijazi has painted a vivid picture with historical accuracy to create a powerful expression. Apr 24, Maira rated it it was amazing. I was in 6th grade when I read this, obviously it is in Urdu but I wish people could read its translated version as well if it exists. This is one of the books that set me on the path of reading. Naseem Hijazi is one of my first inspirations. This is a story of great sacrifice and blood shed that Muslims of subcontinent had to endure at the time of partition.

The book starts with the tale of a village which ensconced people of all religions and casts in a merry and amicable environment. Those pe I was in 6th grade when I read this, obviously it is in Urdu but I wish people could read its translated version as well if it exists.

Those people were a tight knit as it has been explained by various tales in the first part of book "Muskharatein", but that all changes at the eve of partition and the struggle begins. The perspective on this book is good. Author has presented and analysed all factors that led to an abrupt turn of events.

I highly recommend it, it is a must read. Jun 30, Hasher rated it it was amazing. Feb 07, Ali Yasir rated it it was ok. A typical Hijaazi history novel where hero is always Muslim.

Ever since, i fell in love with it. I started reading Naseem Hijazi in at the age of 11,after my uncle's death ,and khaak aur khoon was one of the last of his I've read I've read all of his novels, even re-read them, which I rarely do. He is one of the reasons I am now a patriotic person who adores history.

The book starts off as awesome, with witty characters like afzal and ramzan which make you l I started reading urdu in grade 2 when i saw "naunehaal" while buying books for my new session.

The book starts off as awesome, with witty characters like afzal and ramzan which make you long once again that you were alive at the time leading to independence. But, for me as a lover of Pakistani history the most inspirational and engrossing part was saleem's teenage years in Islamia college and his journey to becoming involved in the movement. I rarely cry on books, but the partition stuff was too much for me, I wept while reading it, it just broke me to pieces.

A line from this book will always echo in my heart ,when Ramzan inevitably one of my favorites says to Lachman Singh ," main wahi Ramzan hoon 9i am the same Ramzan tum meri har baat par hannsa karte thay you used to laugh at my ever joke Lachman Singh yaad hai, jab main bemaar hua tha toh tum kaha karte thay agar ramzam mar gaya toh gaaon suna ho jaye ga do you remember Lachman Singh, when I fell sick you used to say if Ramzan dies, this village will become desolate.

The last part of the book i have translated bits by bits to read to people biased towards not reading urdu. I have tried my best to do justice to this book because I feel it should be read again and again, but you can only realise this after reading.
